Mrs. Smith's Chemistry students became spectroscopists as they investigated how the Northern Lights get their brilliant colors! Using flame tests, students observed how different metal ions emit unique colors when heated—just like the gases in Earth’s atmosphere that glow when excited by solar energy.
From vivid greens to flashes of crimson and violet, the lab lit up our classroom and helped students connect atomic emission spectra to one of nature’s most spectacular phenomena. It was amazing to see their curiosity spark as they realized that the same science behind a Bunsen burner flame is what paints the night sky!
Way to go, chemists—your excitement and discoveries made this lab truly electrifying! #ColonelTOUGH
